(04/26/2010) Statistics from the Federal Ministry of Health show that the number of sickness-related absenteeism in the first three months of this year increased by twelve percent compared to the same period last year. A gender difference is becoming increasingly clear: women are missing more often than men.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, absenteeism should total over 3.5 percent of the basic working time. The most frequently cited reasons include symptoms of the musculoskeletal system, which could focus on back and neck pain. But respiratory diseases and injuries are also on par. There are many absences, especially at the beginning of the week. Psychological complaints are also among the most common reasons. Their appearance has almost doubled in the past 20 years.

It can be assumed here that, contrary to the situation 20 years ago, many professions today are characterized less by physical than by intellectual work. The stress has certainly increased. In naturopathy, the increase in psychological causes of absenteeism is viewed as highly problematic and worthy of intervention. Many workers can no longer handle the stress physically. Sitting and increased computer workplaces will surely lead to an increase in back and neck problems. Even working with the computer mouse could lead to tenis arm complaints, carpal tunnel syndromes or Ulnaris complaints. Respiratory diseases are also likely to be associated with the increase in allergic diseases, which often affect the respiratory system.

As there is more and more positive news regarding the economic situation, not only in Germany, workers may also dare to stay at home. While many did not dare in times of crisis and went to work despite complaints, for fear of losing their jobs. It is also conceivable that the stress or fears of existence during the crisis are now showing their effects. (TF)
